Henry Tuilagi is a former rugby player who represented the Samoan national rugby team several times. He also became part of many well-established clubs in Italy and France. Henry Tuilagi was born on 12th August 1976, in Fogapoa, Samoa. He holds Samoan nationality. His father Tuilagi Vavae was a politician and a deputy speaker of the Samoan government. He also served as a high chief on the Fatausi village council.

Henry’s mother Aliitasi used to run a shop in the humble village of Fatausi-Fogapoa, selling foods.

Safe to say, the family has had difficulties but they survived regardless. His older brother Freddie Tuilagi once summed up their life in a statement. He said, “We weren’t wealthy, we weren’t poor.” 

Henry Grew Up With Six Siblings

He spent the majority of his childhood in Fogapoa with his six brothers Anitelea, Freddie, Alesana, Sanele, Manu, and Olotuli.

While growing up in the village, the Tuilagi siblings didn’t have a well-managed place to play rugby but they managed somehow. The brothers honed their prowess on any available patch of beach, scrubland, or even concrete.

How many Tuilagi brothers play rugby?

Except for their one brother Olotuli, they all played rugby. Moreover, all of them have a prolific career in the game.

The oldest Freddie played as a wing or center. He was part of English clubs like Halifax Blue Sox and St. Helens. He also spent four years playing for Leicester Tigers (2000-04).

Similarly, Alesana Tuilagi is also an incredibly strong player who played several times for his national team Samoa. Moreover, he also played for Parma, an Italy rugby union club and Leicester Tigers.

Furthermore, Henry’s brothers Anitelea, Sanele, and Manu are still playing rugby.

Henry Tuilagi Career

He made his professional debut playing for Parma in the Italian super 10 competition in 2002. The same year, Henry played the World Cup qualifier match against Fiji at Nadi, along with brothers Fereti and Alesana.

The player later also represented the national team of Samoa many times.

Henry’s time in Leicester Tigers

Henry Tuilagi made his biggest breakthrough after he joined Leicester Tigers in 2003. His first season with the team ended with his 24 appearances. He couldn’t make his full appearance during the full 2004/05 season because of his leg injury.

Henry was part of the team until going to France to play for Perpignan in the Top 14 in 2007. His younger brother Manu still plays for Leicester.

Tuilagi is one of the strongest athletes in the history of sports. When the guest host Vernon Kay asked questions to the England flanker James Haskell and former captain Mike Tindall regarding Henry, Haskell recalled some encounters,

There’s no-one that’s ever scared me because, I think, then you wouldn’t play the game… but there was one player that I was super wary of and always wondered where he was. That was Henry Tuilagi.

He further added,

The problem with Henry is, for a start, he was about 135kgs. He used to stand in the back-field and people used to kick him the ball, and he would catch it and hold it in one hand. His hand was so big that it looked like a miniature rugby ball

Henry Tuilagi once struggled with depression. He opened up his depression story with a very lengthy Facebook status after the death of a French rugby player, Franck Lascassies in June 2012. Frank reportedly committed suicide at the age of 21. Henry wrote,

Seeing a young man who was also a talented rugby player lose his life has made me want to share my story in the hopes it will help someone out there struggling with the same struggle #Mental Health #You are not alone.

Tuilagi further revealed that he fought alone for a long time which later resulted in alcohol addiction. He subsequently sought professional help.
